Russell Brand Gets it Right on Porn

I never thought this would happen, but I actually agree with Russell Brand on something.  In this video, Brand lays out the harm of pornography and explains how it harms relationships between men and women.  It’s a shockingly eloquent explanation.  He quotes a priest, points to statistics, confesses the damage of his own experience with porn and even mocks the idea that looking at porn is a productive use of time.  My favorite line is when he said:

“I feel like if I had total dominion over myself, I would never look at pornography again.”

Russell Brand Porn Explanation - Feb, 2015Brand is obviously a very intelligent man.  Few acquire his level of fame without some serious IQ.  While he often portrays characters who are only concerned with sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, his six minute rant shows a man with a solid understanding of the harm of pornography and a sincere concern for how it’s impacting younger people with almost endless access to provocative media.  He uses his trademark humor to highlight how the harmful affects of porn show up in his own attitudes toward women.  He acknowledges seeing women as objects but admits he doesn’t want to.  He would prefer to see them as a whole person.  While likely unintentional, it’s a great endorsement of the image of God.

The world is waking up to the harm of pornography.  Perhaps Brand’s eloquent rant will encourage other celebrities to join in the chorus.  Hopefully, they’ll choose to wear shirts when tape their remarks.
